I just wanted to update what’s going on this week with bridgeWORKS | poetHouse meetings.

the shepherd the knuckleheadTonight is Shepherd and the Knucklehead. Come join us as we mix it up a bit at the poetHouse art studio. This year will be one of trying new things with our traditional pub conversation experience. Be ready for story, song, poetry, art… and of course, the chance to live the question. Click HERE for more details.

William P Young the ShackThursday night is our first installment of bridgeBOOKS bridge-ing together as we dialog the books that change us. We will be starting this week, Thursday, February 5 | 7pm. We will start at poetHouse and then decide on our location of meeting when we get there.  February we will be dialoging the issues raised in THE SHACK, by William Young… pain, healing, and our image of God (however we see him.her).

gaining our footing @ Shepherd and the Knucklehead… all new for 2009

The new year… well upon us… leaves many of us trying to gain footing as we try to move forward. Many of us don’t have the footing we wish for… like we are trying to run on ice. Pushing forward with great effort, but moving slow if at all, and at the same time just doing what we can to keep from crashing down. I hear talk of hope… see flashes of vision… smell winds of change…

knucklehead… but sometimes it is hard to believe its coming. What glares me in the face so often is the insecurity and the fear that wind their ways around the things we hold most dear. It is a time for questions… all that we have asked before in our times of wonderings.

  • Who is in control?
  • How much stuff is enough?
  • Where is the safe place?
  • Who is my neighbor and what does he.she need?

We don’t have the answers all that often and I am reminded of the words of our patron saint, Rainer Maria Rilke, as he says: “…have patience with everything that is unsolved in your heart. Try to love the QUESTIONS THEMSELVES… do not now look for the answers. They cannot be given to you because you could not live them, … at present you need to LIVE the question…” I’ll try… but we need each other… we are always beginning. ALWAYS BEGINNING… and for now, we just need space for that to be ok.

2009 brings a change with our Shepherd.Knucklehead wonderings. In an effort to go less formal and less costly, we will be meeting at an even richer space, ripe with possibilities… a hub of activity –  poetHOUSE | tbd loft | minnesota ave downtown (7ish first monday of the month)

So next Monday, we dive into it again, folks. Bring a friend. Our songster is, like the loft, tbd. The question is determined and I can promise a good one… but you’ll have to wait to find out. Beverages as well, you’ll have to bring your own. No worries, there’s a wine bar downstairs. $2 PBRs if you’re lucky.

So Monday | February 2 | 7ish @ the poetHouse... Shepherds… Knuckleheads… somewhere inbetweens… see you there! (and forward this on to the other hungry ones you know)

Shepherds and Knuckleheads Gather once again

7:00pm Bend Brewing Company Tonight

Gathering once again we wonder together over the questions… the juicy ones… the questions that we don’t get the permission to ask, but perhaps we ponder more often than we care to admit. Questions that keep us awake at night. Questions that we keep coming back to and our answers keep changing when we are up and when we are down.

Our Bard for the evening, Bruce Schweitzer will give us the invitation into the question of the evening… and a rich one it is.
There will be story… there will be beer. Guests from Seattle, Portland… parker, our founding knucklehead will be joining in the hosting | priesting | holding of the space.

If you have written anything that you may feel inclined to share, bring it along… our space is open and safe enough for sharing.

So bring yourself… and bring any others who might feel so inclined to BE with us.
May you find your shepherd-ness in the midst of the knucklehead,
Nate

Safe Space for the “hungry” ones

Shepherd and the Knucklehead, Monday… Sunday evening gathering at my place… the energy is still with me even today, Wednesday. We’ve been talking about belonging

What does it mean to belong?
With whom do you belong?
In what places do you belong?
What is it that is missing in those moments|places that we don’t belong?

We’ve been talking community for the last three weeks… playing out into my writing (intro here, #2, #3, #4). The big realization|actualization at hand is the idea of opening safe space for each other to truly be… to learn who we are in the light of the love of God, and to share that in the way of Jesus. Affirmed this week, Sunday night: We feel safe in our community… it really is a place we can come and challenge, be challenged, and grow, knowing that we are going to be loved no matter what. All who have come and gone have left with this impression.

The issue at hand, though, is that we know there are many, many in our direct spheres of relationship that desperately need a safe place. How do we share with those outside, what we hold and value so dearly on the inside? How do we move beyond thinking that those outside are not really outside but part of us? The differentiation of in|out, while it seems inevitable is something that we want to continually subvert.

We looked at John 4, where Jesus talks to the Samaritan woman at the well… or… more than talks to her. It was made so real to us that what Jesus really did was bring to her that which was at the deepest part of his being… that of living water. He invited her and spoke to her deepest need without passing any judgment on her life. His reputation also was one that inspired safety and trust amongst his disciples. Because of this, the woman was free to relax into the joy of the future… and her city was changed.

As this became very real to us, one of us noted that a couple of men he knew were overwhelmed with the task of caring for their families as their wives were gone or sick. The opportunity unfolded before us… and we now will be providing food for one of these men and his family.

Foothold… moving forward… energy…

Shepherd and the Knucklehead – Monday

Tomorrow (Monday) will be our third holding of the Shepherd and the Knucklehead at Bend Brewing company… 7 pm. Join us for this time of engaging in conversations together over the questions that we don’t always get to ask. Story, music, and poetry I can promise. The rest is up to you.

These things I know:
Our bard | musician will be Janelle Musson inviting us into conversation together with one of her recent songs
Bard | Poet Joey Valentine will be reciting a poem for our enjoyment | wonder.

This Knucklehead will be there, excited to see those that show… anticipating the magic of the evening and the wonder of real-life questions in conversation. The question for the evening will be given when we gather tomorrow. Till then, live in the ones you have.
Breath on,
Nate

There is no such thing as a worthless conversation, provided you know what to listen for. And the questions are the breath of life for a conversation.” ~James Nathan Miller
